Low-Maintenance Variegated Plants for Fuss-Free Color and Drama

At Grubb & Nadler we grow dozens of varieties of yuccas, cordylines, and agaves, many of which boast stunningly variegated foliage. Their variegation make them versatile, from a design perspective, and also brings drama and color to the garden with low water and maintenance needs. What more could you want?

Yucca ‘Bright Star’ (above) is a true beauty, with warm golden leaves striped with soft green and candy pink. This plant is a slow grower, so it’s great for urban gardens, entry gardens, and borders.

Cordyline australis ‘Torbay dazzler’ and Aeonium ‘Sunburst’ make a sweet pair, with their muted palette of butter yellows, soft greens, and a hint of pink. This is one of our favorite cordylines because it is more compact than some other varieties and tolerates a wide range of growing conditions. It loves life in coastal California! Here’s a close-up shot:

Agave mediopicta alba is another great choice for a drought-tolerant statement plant with a variegated leaf. The bold, creamy stripe on its leaf provides for excellent contrast in a design (we love it here as a foil for a darker-leafed aeonium).

Another fabulous variegated agave in our collection is Agave angustifolia ‘Marginata.’ It has a rounded, dense rosette form and a pleasingly uniform variegation, with a cream margin along the edge of each green leaf.
