Choose Leucadendrons for Low-Water Loveliness
Among the protea-family plants, leucadendrons are some of our favorites. They’re vigorous evergreen shrubs that provide year-round color and an exotic look in the garden. Native to South Africa, leucadendrons grow beautifully in California, with low water and maintenance needs.
Leucadendron ‘Ebony’
‘Ebony’ is a standout for its deep purple foliage, which produces crimson red bracts for months beginning in winter. It maintains a nice compact size and, like its cousin ‘Safari Sunset,’ doesn’t shy away from colder temps (down into the 20s). This plant is in bloom and available now!
Leucadendron ‘Safari Goldstrike’
‘Safari Goldstrike’ (above) is a versatile beauty, with lustrous bright green leaves and a pale yellow center cone that can turn to a lovely dusty pink in full sun.
Leucadendron discolor ‘Pom Pom’
In the spring, Leucadendron discolor ‘Pom Pom’ produces these adorable orange pollen cones surrounded by buttery yellow pale bracts.
Leucadendron ‘Jester’
‘Jester’ has a richly variegated leaf, with pink, green, and pale yellow tones all mixed into one eye-catching package, crown by rich-hued red bracts during the winter and spring.
Leucadendron ‘Safari Sunset’
‘Safari Sunset’ (above) is popular for good reason, with its reliably vigorous nature and year-round color. It can grow (quickly!) to over eight feet tall, or can be kept smaller with pruning. It even tolerates frost!
We grow over a dozen gorgeous varieties of leucadendron. View our full availability list here.
